Russia recognizes breakaway Georgian regions as independent states 

Along with declaring the independence of breakaway pro-Russian regions in Georgia, South Ossetia and Abkhazia on Tuesday, Russia’s Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev also warned that Russia would go to any lengths to defend them. Western governments are criticizing Russia for complicating diplomacy, with U.S. Foreign Secretary David Miliband stating that Georgia’s independence and territory could not be decreed by Russia. Russia’s envoy to NATO likened the situation to the eve of World War One by comparing Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili to the assassin Gavrilo Princip. However, Russia’s foreign minister seemed confident his country would ride out the storm, saying, 'I don't believe this should really be a doomsday scenario. I believe common sense should prevail.'

LPGA to test players’ English ability

Beginning in 2009, the LPGA will require all of its golfers to have their spoken English ability up to par or have their membership in the pro golf tour suspended. The league has said that the move is not intended to shut the door on golfers from any particular country. Rather, they hope to make the league more accessible to fans and sponsors by having players interact with fans, media, and sponsors in English. Although there are 45 South Korean players out of the 121 players in the LPGA, the association’s deputy commissioner assured players that the LPGA is a 'global tour and is not targeting any specific player or country.' LPGA player Sun-Hwa Lee is working with a tutor to improve her English, and says that because the tour is losing sponsors, all the other players understand the need to learn English.
